We have a number of mandatory items that participants must wear or carry during the Race:
- Bike Helmet
- Lightweight Windproof Jacket
- Lightweight Back-Pack
- Water Container with at least 1 litre of drink
- Food (Snacks and/or sweets)
- Running shoes
- Gloves
However we also suggest a few other things to keep you comfortable. Here are a few suggestions and hints about both the mandatory and recommended equipment for the Race.
1. |
Running Shoes
These should be comfortable and it is vital that they have good grip. They will get wet and dirty during the Race.
|
2. |
Sports Socks
We strongly suggest that you wear socks that rise above the ankle. Trainer socks tend to slip into your running shoes and you will get blisters on your heels.
|
3. |
Cycling Shorts
Don’t wear cotton underwear – it chafes when wet! Swimming costumes or lycra underwear is preferable. Close fitting lycra shorts are recommended (but not padded cycling shorts). You will get wet during the Race and loose-fitting shorts can rub. Do not wear long trousers even if it is cold. They will get wet and you will be extremely uncomfortable.
|
4. |
Over-shorts
Some competitors wear a pair of running shorts over the top of their lycra shorts to give them better protection whilst scrambling. It is very much a personal preference.
|
5. |
Bike Helmet
This is mandatory and the helmet must fit properly. Participants must wear one at all times during the Race and it must be properly done up.
|
6. |
Gloves
Gloves are also mandatory. They provide protection for the hands when rock scrambling. Many competitors wear half-fingered cycling gloves. You will find them in most good cycling shops.
|
7 |
Back-pack
A small back-pack with a water reservoir (such as a Camelbak) is the best thing to wear during the Race. The bag MUST contain at least one litre of water either in a bottle or in a reservoir.
Bottles of water are OK but they are more cumbersome as you will have to keep stopping to get your drink out! A lightweight Windproof Jacket is mandatory (it can keep you warm when it is windy and you are wet through). Put some snacks or sweets in as well to keep your energy levels up during the Race.
TIP: Your bag will get wet so put things in zip-loc bags to keep them dry and don’t carry a phone!
|
8 |
T-shirt
The Race T-shirt will be given to you at the Bike Check. Girls generally wear a swimsuit or a lycra support top underneath. Remember you will get wet and you need to stay comfortable. Cotton tops get heavy and baggy when wet. For safety reasons, all competitors must wear the official race T-shirt.
