The Race

The Wellcome Team FEAR Junior Challenge is an adventure race for young people aged between 8 and 18.  It is held in Discovery Bay at the end of November every year.

Teams swim, run, mountain bike, coasteer, jump into water and solve puzzles around Discovery Bay.

An important part of the Race is the sponsorship that competitors raise for the charity Youth Outreach.  For the last few years we have been able to give over HK$100,000 to the Charity.

There are three age groups with the following categories:

Juniors (Teams of 3)
Under 9 (aged 8 on the day of the race)
Under 10 (aged 9 on the day of the race)
Under 11 (aged 10 on the day of the race)

Intermediates (Teams of 2)
Under 12 (aged 11 on the day of the race)
Under 13 (aged 12 on the day of the race)

Seniors (Teams of 2)
Under 14 (aged 13 on the day of the race)
Under 16 (aged 15 or under on the day of the race)
Under 19 (aged 18 or under on the day of the race)

Transportation

For non‐DB competitors, we have the following information to help you with your travel arrangements for the Bike Check and Race Day.

Ferries
The first ferry from Pier 3, Central on Sunday morning is 06:30 and the next one is at 07:10.  Please click here for the DB ferry timetable.

DB Tunnel
For those of you arriving through the DB Tunnel, please be aware that bikes are not allowed on either the Tung Chung or Sunny Bay buses. However, you can carry bikes in the luggage section of the Airport Bus if there is room (fare $32).  There is no access to Discovery Bay by private car or taxi without prior booking and payment of a tunnel fee. Bikes cannot be ridden through the DB Tunnel.  Click here for the bus timetables and here for a map of the airport bus stops.

Notice from DB transport dept: DB03R (Sunny Bay - DB) will not be in service from 0600-1000 on Sunday 27th November 2011 due to  the UNICEF Charity Run 2011.  Please use DB01R (Tung Chung - DB) instead.

Kaido from Mui Wo

There is no suitable Kaido on Sunday morning.  In previous years, South Lantau teams have organised a private Kaido to bring competitors over.  This may not be practical this year given the staggered starts as the first senior competitors need to be in Discovery Bay by 7am to register.

Internal Transport

Bike Check
The Marina Helipad is a ten minute easy walk from the Ferry Pier.  Buses can be caught to and from the Marina Club which is close to the Helipad but club members take priority and the bus will not take bikes.  The fare is $5.

Registration & Race Start
Registration will be at the Kindergarten as in previous years which is a five minute walk from the ferry pier.  The Race Start is at the pier-side very close to the main ferry pier.  The finish is at North Plaza (close to the DB Tunnel).  You can take either a C4 or C9 bus from the bus terminus to North Plaza.  The fare is $4 and buses accept Octopus.

Here is a map of Discovery Bay with the start and finish points marked.
