The Race

The Wellcome Team FEAR Junior Challenge is an adventure race for young people aged between 8 and 18.  It is held in Discovery Bay at the end of November every year.

Teams swim, run, mountain bike, coasteer, jump into water and solve puzzles around Discovery Bay.

An important part of the Race is the sponsorship that competitors raise for the charity Youth Outreach.  For the last few years we have been able to give over HK$100,000 to the Charity.

There are three age groups with the following categories:

Juniors (Teams of 3)
Under 9 (aged 8 on the day of the race)
Under 10 (aged 9 on the day of the race)
Under 11 (aged 10 on the day of the race)

Intermediates (Teams of 2)
Under 12 (aged 11 on the day of the race)
Under 13 (aged 12 on the day of the race)

Seniors (Teams of 2)
Under 14 (aged 13 on the day of the race)
Under 16 (aged 15 or under on the day of the race)
Under 19 (aged 18 or under on the day of the race)

The Course

There are three courses of varying length and difficulty - one each for the Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors.  The Senior course is the most demanding.

The race is held each year within the confines of Discovery Bay.

The design of the courses varies from year to year but in previous years has involved the following elements:

  • Mountain Biking
  • Swimming (with life-jackets)
  • Coasteering (navigating along a beach or coastline)
  • Canoeing (Intermediates and Seniors only)
  • A water jump
  • An abseil or zip-line (Seniors only)
  • A number of team puzzles and tests

The course length ranges from approximately 6km for the Juniors to 10km for the Seniors but this will vary from year to year.  The first competitors usually cross the finish line in two hours and we expect all competitors to finish within four hours.

Participants are not allowed to see the course beforehand.  The course is weill marked with ribbons and arrows and there are marshals all along the route.

Parents can see the course at the Race Briefing held a few days before the Race but we ask that they keep the course a secret from their children.
